Dream Big: In the Discovery Zone
There are three kinds of people reading this blog: people with no dreams, people with little dreams, and people with BIG dreams. Would you like to become a person who dreams big? In the next eight weeks, I’m going to share 8 success strategies to help you DREAM BIG. Here is the first:
Discover what you want.
If you’re like many people, you may be more aware of what you don’t want.
- I don’t want to be poor.
- I don’t want to be lonely.
- I don’t want to be in an unhappy marriage.
- I don’t want to struggle with depression or fear.
Your mind is a GPS and will gravitate toward whatever you focus on. It is much more powerful to focus on what you want rather than what you don’t want. One person I’m coaching feels that discovering what he wants is too selfish. Yet Psalm 37:4 says, “Delight yourself in the Lord and he will give you the desires of your heart.”
Many people are living their parents’ dreams. They have not allowed themselves to truly discover what they want.
Here is an exercise to help you discover your wants:
Write down 25 things you want to do. Then write down 25 things you want to have. Now write 25 things you want to be before you die. Now start writing what you want in each of these domains of life.
- Ideal job or career
- Ideal vision of your body and health
- Ideal financial life
- Ideal recreation/leisure
- Ideal relationships
- Ideal personal life
- Ideal giving to community and world
Coaching points:
- Are you more focused on what you don’t want or exactly what you want?
- Do you have no dreams, little dreams, or big dreams?
